My husband and I bought an old Vermont farm 7 years ago. We both grew up in farm families and always wanted to carry on the farming tradition. Full time farming wasn't for us but we always had a few animals around. We started with my horses, then expanded to raising pigs seasonally, we discussed raising beef cattle but it always came down to the fact that we didn't have the resources to sustain beef production
About five years ago I began reading about miniature cattle. The more I read the more I was convinced that this was the perfect farming opportunity. With miniature cattle we do not have to have all the equipment or barn space of a regular farming operation. We are able to sustain our small herd on our farm. We do not have to put up huge quantities of feed for the winter nor do we have large grain bills. The combination of the Belted Galloway breed and the miniature size leads to an animal perfectly suited to the part time farmer. We have thoroughly enjoyed owning mini belties and we look forward to years of breeding and selling these wonderful animals.
